The Primal Play Method® is an evidence-informed approach to physical activity created by Darryl Edwards. It uses active play to make movement enjoyable, adaptable and easier to sustain across the lifespan.
The method draws on exercise physiology, cognitive neuroscience, evolutionary biology and play psychology. The Primal Play Method® applies these principles to exercise adherence, health, fitness, physical function and healthy ageing.
Evolutionary Biology
Natural movement, movement diversity and physical capacity.
Exercise Physiology
Strength, fitness, metabolic health and physical function.
Cognitive Neuroscience
Brain health, learning, attention and motor development.
Play Psychology
Enjoyment, autonomy, motivation and adherence.

No. The Primal Play Method® is an evidence-informed approach to physical activity created by Darryl Edwards. It uses active play, movement variety and exercise science to support health, physical function and sustained participation across the lifespan.
“Primal” refers to fundamental human movement and movement diversity. The Method does not attempt to recreate an ancestral lifestyle or prescribe a particular diet.
Active play is physical activity experienced through play. It can involve games, exploration, movement challenges, dancing, chasing, climbing, balancing, carrying or other forms of movement shaped by enjoyment, choice, curiosity, challenge or social interaction. It can be adapted across age, ability, setting and physical capacity.
Physical activity can improve health, fitness and physical function when the type, intensity and dose are appropriate, and participation continues over time. The Primal Play Method® connects exercise science with the behavioural experience of movement, helping people find ways to move that are appropriate, engaging and repeatable.Movement Is MedicineHealthy Ageing & Physical FunctionExercise Science Research

I’m Darryl Edwards, founder of the Primal Play Method®, author, speaker and exercise medicine practitioner, and I play. A pretty simple little statement: “I play.” But it changed my life.
I spent nearly two decades working in technology before changing direction and building my work around a simple question: how can we make physical activity something people want to keep doing?
That question led me to active play.
My work now brings together exercise science, movement and play to help people build strength, fitness, confidence and physical function across the lifespan.
I’ve shared this approach through my books, international speaking, professional education and my TED Talk, Why Working Out Isn’t Working Out.
At the heart of it is a simple idea: movement works when we can keep doing it. Play can help make that repetition enjoyable.
“Darryl’s Primal Play Method is life, beauty and joy all at the same time. It’s also a lot of fun!”
“What can I say...the most fun I have ever had when 'working out' - in fact, the beauty of it is that you don't feel that you are working out! Primal Play Tag one of my favourite games to play with my kids!”
“Darryl's Primal Play is amazing and captured my imagination. I'm an explorer and the curiosity we had has children was regained. This was efficient movement and my body told me this was good for me.”
“Darryl’s program reconnects you with the innate love of physical activity, social connection, and fun in the ways nature designed.”
“Primal Play Tag - it's really good, such a fun game, so challenging, engaging and just so much joy for all ages!”
“As a medical doctor, I regularly discuss physical activity with my patients. I often recommend the Primal Play website, Animal Moves book and cards as a well rounded program that covers strength, balance, stamina and speed. It is fun to do for the whole family.”
I cannot recommend this restorative approach highly enough as I have experienced the benefits myself by doing it!
“I absolutely love the philosophy and execution of Primal Play! These movements REALLY are challenging and require so much strength, speed, stamina, stability and suppleness. The ultimate workout. Want a bulletproof musculoskeletal system? Go primal!”
